A proposal to wander around the city of Madrid at this time of year is the Parque del Retiro. This is one of the largest urban parks in Europe.
The gardens of the Palacio del Buen Retiro, built under the reign of Philip IV, near the Jeronimos Monastery, has an area of 118 hectares. Since its initial construction and during the following reigns the original design has been modified, adding buildings, fountains and avenues to the park we know today.
It is open to the public every day of the year, and from October to March, from 6am to 10pm.
At this time of year it is a good place to watch the colors of the trees change in the fall. Having chestnuts and plane trees mostly dotted with other species such as cypresses and maples, the colors of the leaves of the trees resulting in a natural spectacle worthy of being contemplated.
This is a good plan to do with children as Retiro Park has many playgrounds and areas in which to carry out activities with them. The carriage ride is a good example, being asphalted and wide, you can ride a bike or skate.

Another activity that can be done besides just walking, are the boats at the pond. For a reduced price (between 6 and 8 euros per boat), you can take a boat ride enjoying the monument of Alfonso XII.
The park has numerous fountains and sculptures along the various walks plus buildings among which the Crystal Palace is to be admired.
